Each year the Dubin artist
chooses the convocation theme. The Dubin artist works as a
facilitator with the IARC staff and a research associate to choose this research theme,
relating it to areas of the School's collection. Then, in the fall of each year, the IARC hosts a group
of ten Native American artists for an intensive week-long meeting or convocation that
relates to the Dubin artist fellow's artwork and the IARC's annual research theme. The
purpose of these convocations is to collectively advance these leading artists' creative
thought processes. Subsequent research themes and ensuing convocations have been
Micaceous Pottery, Pueblo Embroidery, Pueblo Inlay Mosaic Jewelry, and Contemporary
Southwestern Indian Basketry, Southwestern Indian Easel Painting, Kachinas
and Storytellers.
Many of these artist gatherings will result in publications by the SAR
Press, and markets
and museum exhibitions in cooperation with other local museums.
